Oh, Can You Bring a Cake?

I'm starting to wonder if my friends invite me to "help" with activities just so that I'll bring cake...LOL

This was for a baby shower my friend Hannah held did for a friend of hers - not a friend I know, but what better way to make friends than with CAKE!

Anyhoo...

I got to practice some more on my buttercream smoothing skills (which still aren't as awesome as I want), and finally got to use the First Impressions baby mould I bought a while back!

I think the baby is ridiculously cute...

...as long as I think of it as a cake topper. And not as an edible baby. Because that freaks me out.

(And then my warped mind thinks about belly cakes, which freak me out too. And pretty soon I've planned a freaky, pregnant belly Halloween cake in my head. Complete with surprise baby inside, and possibly red velvet cake and apply jelly filling. Very Halloween-esque.)





See? It's darn cute!

On a side note, last week the little girl I watch said to me "I'm going to tell my mom to invite you to my birthday party, because you're the only one who can make the cake"

At least I get an invite LOL

Sliding Frosing

I really like baking for friends and family, and not just because I love them.

I also love being able to experiment on them!

This one was for a friend of ours who wanted a normal German Chocolate cake, (AKA nothing fancy or fondant covered.) But that's no fun, so I made Swiss Meringue Buttercream. I love how it tastes, but haven't offered it to customs yet, because I'm still in the experimenting phase.

And this is why:


The darn stuff has a much lower tolerance for heat than the buttercream recipe I'm currently using! I did what I could to fix it, using the back of a spoon and the leftover frosting. (I wasn't in my own kitchen when it slid of course) 


On the positive side, it was delicious!!

More Man Cakes

The other day, one of my regulars called to order a cake for her husband's birthday. She didn't give me much direction, just that she wanted white cake and frosting, so that people's teeth wouldn't get turned funny colors. And buttercream...ah buttercream, we meet again.

I'm not getting any better at smoothing, that's for sure.




I don't know if she liked it or not - she never comments on them either way. But since this is the 4th cake I've done for her, I'm guessing she likes my work!
