Rustic Cakes

Did you know that when it comes to my favorite things, cakes and dogs share the top honors?

(Okay, second place honors. My family and friends have first spot.)

So it's no surprise that one of my favorite people is our vet. The first friend I made here in Glenrock works at the clinic, and things just went from there.

Anyhoo (boy do I get distracted easily)

Her daughters both have June birthdays, so they do a BIG themed birthday party for them every year. This year was cowboys and indians, and so she asked for three rustic cakes - one for each girl, and one for the guests.

Now, I LOVE rustic cakes, and was thrilled when she ordered, because I've never had an order for one! In my enthusiasm, I may have went a little overboard on size...

The main cake had a different flavor for each tier - white citrus, chocolate strawberry and vanilla raspberry. I put classic vanilla buttercream on all three.

This one was chocolate strawberry:

Rainbows!

I ♥ Pinterest. And like thousands of other people out there, I have lots of boards of things I want to try. Naturally, my biggest board consists of cakes and other tasty treats I want to try! But I don't often get the excuse to bake and decorate just because, so oftentimes my kids end up getting two birthday cakes instead of one. But that's appropriate, since we usually have a friend party, and a family party! If you're interested, here's the cake from the friend party.

This one was for the family dinner. The ideas aren't mine - they're straight from something I found on Pinterest at one point or another! I'm not thrilled with my smoothing job on the frosting, but that skill is a work in progress. One of these days I'm going to order the good stuff (AKA Sweetex) and really get serious about buttercream cakes!

1st Birthday Weekend

This weekend involved two 1st birthday parties for two sweet little girls! It seems like my girls were just that age...

This one I designed to match the invitations:

And this one, the customer send me a few pictures of cakes she liked, and I just went from there:

Happy Birthday Baby!

This month my oldest is turning 6. I suppose I'm just like all moms - I don't know where the time went.

We do big parties, and this year's theme was Princesses and Knights. We sent out royal declarations and everything. The royal feast and dragon slaying were the highlights of the event.

I know lots of cake decorators are purists, in that they only put edible things on their cakes. But for a kids birthday, I just can't resist putting toys on the cake. That way it's a treat AND a gift that they can keep!

Spongebob!

I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but I really love doing repeat birthdays for kids. It's so neat to be a part of their lives year after year, seeing them grow. And of course, being included in a family's big events year after year is an honor.

Little Aaron turned two this year, making this the second birthday cake I've done for him. The first was a Cars cake, which was one of the very first cakes I ever made.

And this year's cake:
