More Trading!

Did I already mention I love trading cakes?!

These two I did for my other babysitter - or rather, for her sons. The gun cake I did today, and the Steelers cake last Friday. Now I've done cakes for 3 out of 4 of her kids!

The design for this cake isn't mine - it's directly inspired by Cakes by Susan, a very talented lady here in Wyoming.

Likewise, my babysitter found a cake this like online (right here in fact) and asked for one just like it. Mine isn't nearly as nice as the original, but it's not too bad either!

Melting Cakes

For my nephew's birthday, he asked for Laramie Plainsmen cake. Vanilla. Sounds so simple, right? A high school mascot cake for a 16 year old who loves sports.

Sigh, the cake gods were not smiling down on me.

Oh sure, it looks okay here. But on the way there, the fondant on the top layer melted off. Yes, literally. It melted down the sides, bulging and tearing as it went. I was able to scrape it clean once we got to my sister's house, and thank goodness the Wal-Mart there carries a few cake supplies, because I was able to repair the massive damage.

So, note to self - do not try to transport a cake in high humidity weather with no air conditioning in the car. (Thank goodness it was for family)

Camo Cupcakes

I'm a big fan of bartering, especially when it gets me free babysitting! And bonus - my kids were invited to the party, since the babysitter is also a family friend!

I can't and won't take credit for these cupcakes - you've seen them on Pinterest, and obviously so has my friend! They are originally from Crafty Mama - click here for her much fancier and better looking originals!

Neon Graduation

My first graduation cake was this weekend, and my first gumpaste person come to think of it! It was fun, and I think it turned out pretty cute (if I do say so myself).

Of course, it's easy to do cute, fun cakes when the customer has such fun ideas. She asked for bright, crazy colors in camo and zebra.

I need some practice with both zebra AND camo, but overall it worked. And the grad loved it, which is the whole point, right?

Although note to self...steam the cake BEFORE you put on the cute pearls. The steam takes away their pretty shine :-(

Vikings Cooler Cake

Speaking of cakes for teachers :-)

This cake was for my daughter's preschool teacher.

Well...for her daughter's boyfriend, a die hard Vikings fan.

I'm not too proud to admit that this cake and I fought for two days. It wanted it to smooth nicely, it had other ideas. I wanted the isomalt ice cubes to look more like ice cubes...they didn't agree. I hate when cakes fight with me!!!
