Cute as a Bug

Whoever first said "cute as a bug" must have been thinking about ladybugs. This is the 3rd time I've done ladybugs, and it was just as much fun this time as the last two! I tried to make modeling chocolate antennas, but for some reason the chocolate didn't set up right. I ended up painting antennas on instead. They still looked cute, but not 3D cute which was what I was hoping for. Oh well, I'll have to try again!

Royal Icing

As I've probably mentioned before, I ♥ experimenting with the leftover cake and cookies from orders. And since I had so much cookie dough left over from my last ladybug cake, you can imagine how excited I was to mess around! Since that cake was my first time using royal icing, I wanted to practice some more with it. Being a UW fan, these were my favorite:

They aren't too bad, although I still need a lot of practice. Trust me, there's a reason I'm only showing a few of the many, many  cookies I experimented on!

Ladybugs and Footballs

Now that I've caught up on the neat things I've done and learned since this whole thing started, I can tell you about the cakes I just finished!

I don't often have two birthday cakes at one time, but I did on Saturday. One was for a good friend who lets me experiment on her family birthdays, and the other was for a repeat customer whom I made both a cake and some mini-cakes (like these ones) for in the past.

The first was for my friend's son's 9th birthday:

The other was for a 2nd birthday party:

This customer clearly ♥'s Glorious Treats as much as I do, considering this is the second time she's asked for reproductions of something tasty they made!

One of my favorite blogs is Glorious Treats, because I learn so many fun things there. That's where I first saw these pretty roses, made out of buttercream:

I was really eager to give it a try, and with no cakes planned for a while, I went ahead and made one:

I couldn't believe how pretty it turned out, and how easy the roses were to make!

I Am Ironman

And on the heels of the Batman cake, I got a call to do an Ironman cake! With this cake, I learned how much I ♥ the Wilton color mists. They add such an amazing shine to plain fondant!

As you can see, I got that edible printer that was on my Amazon wish list!

In between the fiances' cakes, I did a batman cake for a little guy's birthday. I like all of the cakes I've done, but I LOVED this one!
