Battle of the Alamo Cake

For anyone who has every bashed on grocery store cake decorators,

(it does happen, I've heard it from both professional cake decorators and uneducated clients),

 I have two words:

Handy Andy

In 1960, the bakery staff of Handy Andy in San Antonio, Texas, put together a massive "Battle of the Alamo Cake" for the premier of John Wayne's movie "The Alamo".

Thirty feet long, it weighed over 2,000 pounds, and served close to 10,000 people.

Right out of their grocery store bakery department.

First Cakes of the Month

My first two cakes of the month - I love the cute little Mickey Mouse Clubhouse
cupcake liners the best.

But this was my favorite cake of the two. My customer requested a small birthday cake for her cousin, who likes hunting. So I went with a soft pink buttercream, with dark pink piping. I accented it with a camo Browning buck, camo lettering, and a wafer paper fantasy flower brushed with pink lustre dust.

Dia de los Muertos - Sugar Skull Cake and Photo Shoot

While I love Halloween, Dia de los Muertos is my favorite holiday - despite the fact that I'm a white girl from Wyoming.

I love celebrating the lives of the people I've loved and lost.

I've always wanted to do a sugar skull cake. When I had a down week with no orders, right before Day of the Dead, I finally got the opportunity.

And never being one to squander an opportunity, I decided to do something else I've always wanted to do - a photo shoot with one of my cakes.

My friend Elizabeth Owen did my makeup. She's an amazing artist with a studio here in town. Click here to see her Facebook page.

And Philip Harnden did the photography. Another amazing artist here in town. We're a small town with a lot of talent. Click here to see his Facebook.
